What is Robert F Kennedy Jr.'s voice condition? Spasmodic dysphonia Los Angeles Times

design speculation

The goal is to emotionally, psychologically, and intellectually involve the audience. Unlike traditional design, which aims for clarity, speculative critical design raises questions without imposing answers. Speculative design is more an attitude or a position that a designer takes on than a methodology. Instead of aiming for solutions that should be practical and efficient in the commercial world, speculative design strives to be imaginative and critical to find a new perspective. The concepts are often built in an idealistic or exaggerated and satirical way to convey the idea and spur debates.

A project can be scientifically driven, technologically driven, culturally, and humanistically driven. Whereas heavily researched speculations are strong representations of how things could look like, ideas are purer, more immediate, and more malleable to development and discourse. In a series of speculative photographs titled When We All Live to 150 (2012), Jaemin Paik examines our quest for prolonging life and its implications on the model of families. When life expectancy is increased to 150, up to six generations may share the same household. The project follows the fictional life of 75-year-old Moyra and her sprawling contract-based family. For this reason, a definitive, final toolkit or method for Speculative Design cannot exist in a single, stable version, but must be a continuous negotiation among practices and tools which are very different from one another and, thus, are capable of catching different aspects of change and evolution.

An overview of contemporary speculative practice

Kennedy was just approaching his 10th birthday when his uncle, President John F. Kennedy, was assassinated. At 14, his father was fatally shot in Los Angeles, on the night he won California’s 1968 Democratic primary for president. Because of this, and the fact that it makes some people sound like they are on the verge of tears, some doctors once believed that the croaking or breathy vocalizations were tied to psychological trauma. SD, as it’s known, affects about 50,000 people in North America, although that estimate may be off because of undiagnosed and misdiagnosed cases, according to Dysphonia International, a nonprofit that organizes support groups and funds research. There was a time before the turn of the millennium when Robert F. Kennedy Jr. gave a full-throated accounting of himself and the things he cared about. He recalls his voice then as “unusually strong,” so much so that he could fill large auditoriums with his words.

How to use design as a tool to create not only things but ideas, to speculate about possible futures. Today designers…

You see, there are many ways to speculate about the future, and while there has been fiery debate about the relevance or position of Speculative Design in our community, we can still use these exercises to face important topics head on, stimulate new conversations, and develop new perspectives for looking at problems. And once you attach it to a real problem and real science, it can be a platform for discovery and used to generate new products and set new agendas today. Speculative Design is one of the most exciting ways for designers to practice problem solving by design.

In practice

Speculative fictions do not exist solely in a futurist vacuum, because the past (i.e. the present we live in) fundamentally impacts our designed vision of the future. As opposed to the open form of science fiction, in speculative fiction there is a link between the present and the imaginary future. Therefore, when re-thinking the future we must think about technologies and social relations that can emerge from the current world we live in. We must bring into question the assumptions and prejudice we have about the role of products and services in everyday life.

So What Does Speculative Design Look Like?

Our speculations about the future of digital gestures in this film are not just meant to envision the “future” or the evolution of technology. They can also be seen as a “B-side” to future scenarios produced and promoted by high-tech companies. The “curious rituals” are really about the gaps and junctures glossy corporate videos on the “future of technology” do not reveal; possible alternative scenarios where some of these devices could be adopted, mis-used, re-appropriated.

The context of exceptional technological progress and domination at the time when radical practices emerged may be related to the present technological context (nano and biotechnologies, data-rich urban environment, ubiquitous computing and so on). And as the radical design was challenging or putting in question the modernist paradigm as the dominant ideology of the time, the new (speculative) design practices are confronting the dominant consumerist ideology. However, it remains to be seen whether the speculative practice has the potential to become the new, post-design practice, “design after design” or yet another utopia and historical reference. Today we can see that capital uses promotion and investments in the technology by programming the technological development to actually colonialize the future. And, whereas traditional design actually legitimizes the status quo, speculative design envisages and anticipates the future, at the same time help- ing us to understand and re-think the world of today.

The way we live our lives and the concepts we take for granted as self-evident are in fact highly influenced by many governing conditions of science, technology, politics, and philosophy. For example, online platforms like MeshMixer and Thingiverse can be used to facilitate the creation and exchange of 3D printed objects that are the protagonists of future design scenarios. As we have seen in the previous sections, most practitioners and theorists operating in the area of Speculative Design intend the practice as a series of different approaches, more than a formal methodology. Mostly relegated to university programmes, R&D departments, or the occasional agency project where a company wants to envision the future, rarely do we see it as an integrated practice in design and business strategy.

CONSIDERING RACE AND TECHNOLOGY

Olamina envisions a future in which Earthseed, the religious doctrine that many inhabitants of Acorn embrace, will propel mankind forward, leaving the devastation of Earth behind to courageously travel the galaxy in search of new worlds in which racism, gender discrimination, sexism and classism are nonexistent. On the surface, this is not so different from the lofty pursuits of Elon Musk or Jeff Bezos, but it is less clear that these innovation tycoons are investing millions of dollars in technology for the purpose of eliminating society's worst ills. Rather, the motivation seems to be about designing cool things and selling these cool things to a particular segment of people who can afford to pay top dollar for such technology - capitalism at its finest. In Butler's Parable of the Talents [21], we see what happens when the primary focus is technology and not people in the example of right-wing christian fanatics who use collar technology to enslave the Acorn adult members, subjugating their bodies to extreme pain and mental, physical and emotional trauma.

Mitigation of Shock (London, 2050) is Superflux’ attempt to make the size and complexity of a hyperobject like climate change tangible, relatable and specific. The sustainable city will be home to parks, universities, schools, a hospital, a stadium, hotels, as well as an industrial complex. The first phase of the project has already started, and will result in the construction of roads, the main buildings, a landfill and a photovoltaic solar power plant by 2024. Earth 2050 is intended to show a picture of how people will live in 20 or 30 years’ time, including what threats will exist, what our lives will be like, what jobs we will have, what we will eat, and how the physical world will interact with the virtual. The website allows you to select a year — 2030, 2040, or 2050 — and look at the predictions for different cities and countries. Together with a group of futurologists, scientists, and Internet users from all corners of the globe, Kaspersky — which has been developing innovative solutions to protect cities and businesses for more than 20 years — has created this beautiful website.

For example, the Paris-based architect studio XTU has envisioned a 2050 where Earth has become inhabitable due to rising temperatures, unbreathable air, and volatile weather. So, to escape an overheated planed, they imagined that humankind will inhabit the sky. The term “speculative design” was popularized by Anthony Dunne and Fiona Raby as a subsidiary of critical design.
